When it comes to corporate sustainability and environmental impact, which retailers rank the highest? Newsweek has the answers. The magazine, in partnership with Corporate Knights Capital, HIP (Human Impact + Profit), Investor, Inc. and others, ranked the world’s largest companies on their “greenness.” We broke down the list to bring you the top multiline and specialty retailers.
According to Fidelity, Inc. the Multiline Retail Industry includes owners and operators of department stores and stores offering diversified general merchandise. It excludes hypermarkets and large-scale super centers.
According to Fidelity the Specialty Retail Industry includes owners and operators of Apparel Retail, Computer & Electronics Retail, Home Improvement Retail, Specialty Stores, Automotive Retail and Homefurnishing Retail.
You might see these big brands and think, “Sure, it’s easy for them to be as environmentally friendly as possible. They have the financial resources to do so.” But according to one of these retailers, moving toward more sustainable practices actually saves the company money.
“At Best Buy, we believe being sustainable is good for business, and we have proof,” Suzanne Hiker wrote in a 2015 blog on Best Buy’s corporate website. “Contrary to the old adage that it costs more to be ‘green’ — it really can save money. Our recent 20% carbon reduction attainment saved Best Buy more than $50 million. Our leaders get it — they made sustainability a priority even through the company’s turnaround.”
